After School Programming Intern at Cathedral of The Rockies Boise First United Methodist Church

OVERVIEW OF THE ORGANIZATION AND THE ROLE
Objective: To implement a Tuesday after-school initiative for local refugee and migrant Junior High students that delivers a safe place after school, basic life skills training, no-cost English language instruction, and experiential learning opportunities through field trips and other group activities, with the aim of empowering their successful integration and fostering a welcoming and humanizing experience.
Mission: To empower refugee and migrant junior high students through after-school support, life skills, English instruction, and experiential learning, fostering their successful integration and a welcoming experience.


Program Highlights:

  • Academic Support: Homework help, no cost English tutoring.
  • Experiential learning: basic cooking classes, arts and crafts, field trips to local museums, libraries, zoo.
  • Social-Emotional Learning: creating and maintaining relationships with volunteers and counselors where they can learn about self- awareness, self-management, and responsible decision making.
  • Social Worker/ Multi Language Teacher Collaboration: Consistent communication and collaboration beyond the program.
  • Family Engagement: Weekly check- ins, quarterly family gatherings.


OPPORTUNITY / PROJECT DUTIES

  • Design and develop an activity schedule that provides a safe, engaging, and enriching environment for students. This may include academic support, recreational activities, arts and crafts, and more.
  • Work closely with volunteers to prepare and implement activities for the day.
  • Participate and engage with students in planned activities, including crafts, group discussions, and other educational or recreational engagements.
  • Provide academic assistance, promote positive behavior, and assist students with conflict resolution.
  • Act as a liaison between staff, students, and volunteers. This includes communicating program updates, policies, and events.
  • Work to establish a budget for supplies needed for the Program (current and future semester)
  • Perform other duties pertaining to Club 717. (i.e. occasional shopping, data entry)


QUALIFICATIONS

  • **Must be a COAS or Education Major 
  • Must be available on Tuesdays from 2:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
  • Must be available to attend Club 717 staff meetings on Thursdays from 2:00 p.m.- 3:00 p.m.
  • Excellent work ethic: attendance, punctuality, trustworthiness, and adherence to Safe Sanctuary and Cathedral’s Policies.
  • Enjoys interacting with youth and parents and is comfortable working with families from a variety of backgrounds who have a wide range of functional literacy.
  • Able to direct classroom activities and work cooperatively with a positive attitude and enthusiasm.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to participate as a team member.
  • Be Kind, patient and considerate.
  • Must set remaining time as in office hours, with occasional remote work hours.

  • Safe Sanctuary Policy Training

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  •  Must submit to background check (Cathedral will cover cost)
