Launch Design Engineer – HV Battery Module

As a launch and sustaining engineer in Tesla’s Battery Module Design Engineering Team, you will be
responsible for the local release, launch, ramp, and sustaining of Battery module components and
assemblies for upcoming Model 3 production, and future Tesla vehicles, in Gigafactory 3, Shanghai.
You will be part of the global team that designs and executes the Battery Modules in all of Tesla’s
vehicle and Energy Products. This includes all structural, thermal, and electrical components required
to make a large battery out of thousands of cells.

The role requires strong fundamentals, and the tenacity to make our designs successful. A team
player mentality is critical, as you are the design lead on the ground collaborating with our factory-
based colleagues. Our design requirements push the limits of physical possibility, which requires you
to be extremely detail oriented and to hold your designs to the highest standards of quality and
manufacturability. Tesla moves quickly, so being self-motivated and disciplined is critical. You must
be passionate, but direction changes quickly, so you must also be resilient.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Take over local design responsibility from new product development engineers during production launch, ramp and sustaining phase
  • Think like a design-engineer: understand and own product function and requirements
  • Function as local design authority, as part of core-design team
  • Collaborate directly with Manufacturing, Process, and Quality
  • Fully understand the factory process and equipment
  • First-responder to yield excursions
  • Root-Cause & Corrective Analysis for production issues
  • Lead battery teardowns for field and factory failures
  • Participate in design review and change control
  • Support new line FATs
  • Disposition of non-conforming material
  • Lead implementation of design changes, including trails and cutovers
  • Own product improvements (cost, complexity reductions), scope dependant upon skill level
  • Own and refine product specifications
  • Own DFMEA’s and support PFMEA’s
  • Anaylze field reliability data of China market and drive improvements
  • Own basic on-site component and system level testing to support design and specification
  • changes; coordinate large validation testing for changes with global team
  • Close, active supplier relationships, including travel to supplier sites
  • Report to HV Battery Module Design Engineering Team based in California, United States.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering, MS a plus.
  • Internship experience as a design or launch/sustaining engineer, preferably in battery or automotive (high volume)
  • Strong Engineering fundamentals in heat transfer, fluids, mechanics, and electronics
  • Proficiency in CAD modeling. CATIA V5/V6 experience a plus but not mandatory.
  • Strong GD&T skills · Proficiency with statistics and data analysis
  • Experience with various manufacturing processes such as plastic injection molding, metal stamping, thermoforming, welding/brazing, plating, heat treating, and bonding. Direct machine shop skills a plus.
  • Experience in designing for high volume assembly, both manual and automated · Experience defining test plans, designing test setups, and analyzing data · A detail oriented personality with solid documentation and reporting skills.
  • Hands on and collaborative
  • Desire to own a lot and work hard - we have small teams and fast timelines
  • Experience with student Formula Vehicle, Solar Car, Hyperloop etc. a plus.
  • Fluent English communicator. Native mandarin Chinese.
  • Based in Shanghai, China for minimum 75% time. Remainder can be spent in California, United States at Design Headquarters in Palo Alto
