Introduction:
HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a novel HIV prevention strategy that involves taking antiretroviral medication to prevent acquisition of HIV and is recommended for populations who are at heightened risk of HIV infection. While a number of PEPFAR countries have piloted or conducted demonstration projects on PrEP, there is now an effort to rapidly scale up PrEP implementation at the national/country level. PEPFAR and USAID are working with country teams, local government officials, and other key stakeholders on implementation planning, demand creation, and policy related to PrEP implementation, and monitoring program performance in order to ensure PEPFAR targets are reached for this new intervention.
