Computer Services Specialist II

Fermilab is America’s premier laboratory for particle physics and accelerator research, funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. We support discovery science experiments in Illinois as well as other locations around the world including; deep underground mines in South Dakota and Canada, mountaintops in Arizona and Chile, and additionally the South Pole.
Fermilab's Accelerator Division operates, maintains, and improves the laboratory's accelerator complex, beam lines and beam targets. We drive scientific discovery by delivering particle beams for experiments. We also conduct accelerator physics research and design and build accelerators to extend the scientific reach of existing facilities.
The Fermilab Accelerator Division seeks a Computing Services Specialist II with a broad and diverse skill set to assist in infrastructure management of servers and software supporting the laboratory’s accelerator control system, and to embark on a large-scale modernization project that is in early planning stages to upgrade the control system. The individual will support Scientific Linux and CentOS servers used in the control system including installation, configuration, upgrading, and troubleshooting hardware and software and assist with PostgreSQL and MariaDB database management. The individual will also participate in the modernization of server clusters and software through tasks such as server virtualization and the evaluation and implementation of configuration management tools and software deployment methodologies. As part of the upgrade team there will be significant opportunities to contribute to the planning, design and deployment of the laboratory’s future accelerator control system.
You Will
  • Design, develop, test, implement, document and/or operate moderately complex scientific, information, computing, networking, storage, business and/or administrative systems and/or services, applying multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills, as required to meet Laboratory needs.       
  • Communicate and coordinate with other technical personnel working closely on a project, including from non-computing disciplines.
  • Provide input for the purchase, deployment, integration, and maintenance of systems and/or services.
  • Define service levels and measure performance metrics.
  • Diagnose, monitor and analyze the performance of information, computing, networking and/or storage systems and/or services.
  • Provide consultation to users and supporting services as needed.
  • Gather, interpret and implement requirements and information from users for specific system and service projects, and obtain feedback.
  • Provide the primary interface to suppliers and vendors for small projects as needed.
  • Plan for the evolution of system(s) and/or services, including security, capacity, and logistical planning.
  • Develop specifications for moderately complex inter-related projects and implement them.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

We Are Looking For
  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science or another scientific related field or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of work experience in computing infrastructure
·      Experience managing clusters of Scientific Linux/CentOS/RHEL servers
·      Experience with configuration management tools
·      Experience with Bash and Python scripting
·      Self-motivated, creative problem solver
·      Excellent troubleshooting and critical thinking skills
·      Excellent written and verbal communication skills
·      Available for after hours on-call support when needed
  • Experience with virtualization desired
·     Experience with containers desired
·     Experience with MariaDB or PostgreSQL desired
·     Knowledge of DevSecOps with a focus on automated testing and deployment desired
·     Technical project management experience desired
·     Experience developing system documentation desired
·     Experience with medium to large scale projects desired
·     Experience with control systems desired
