Legal Compliance Intern

Worldreader seeks to enhance its legal, compliance, and data privacy programs with the support of a junior lawyer that will work directly with Worldreader’s legal department. Worldreader, a global ed-tech non-governmental organization, believes readers build a better world. As such, it provides digital reading solutions to marginalized and vulnerable communities in the Global North and South and operates via six separate legal entities as well as local partners. 

Scope of Work
Worldreader seeks an intern to support two key projects that will enhance the effectiveness of Worldreader.  

Data Privacy & compliance programs
The intern will:
  • Draft and modify global policies and procedures. 
  • Assist in the implementation of policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Benchmark and research best practices in specific aspects of data protection and compliance.
  • Assist in the review of and recommend changes or updates to policies, procedures, and manuals; 
  • Support global teams to internalize procedures by assisting in the development and implementation of internal training. 
  • Keep abreast of regulatory developments and evolving best practices. 
  • Assist in the monitoring of the effectiveness of the data protection program. 

Legal advice & assistance
The intern will:
  • Draft and modify legal contract templates. 
  • Support global teams to internalize procedures by assisting in the development and implementation of internal training. 
  • Assist in the improvement of the legal review process in light of experience.
  • Keep abreast of regulatory developments and evolving best practices. 
 
Worldreader aims to provide its interns with real-life working experience involving collaboration on multiple projects with different teams and shifting priorities. Therefore as part of the internship, candidates will also assist with day-to-day tasks, e.g. supporting legal, compliance, and data privacy training, and ad hoc requests for support.

The intern will engage with Worldreader’s General Counsel & Compliance Officer as a primary point of contact but will also interact with its regional leadership and teams from potentially all departments. 

Timeframe
Worldreader seeks a legal & compliance intern for a period of up to 4-6 months and 12-15 hours per week.

Deliverable
A final report and/or presentation of the projects will be presented to an internal Worldreader committee at a determined date closer to the end of the projects.

Qualifications
Candidate must demonstrate the following skills: 
  • Methodical approach, with strong planning abilities; and 
  • Good communication skills. Ability to communicate and influence clearly both verbally and in written form in English. Knowledge of Spanish will be an added advantage. 

Other requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in a higher education course in law, compliance, or data protection. Enrollment in a Master’s degree will be an added advantage; 
  • Located in the U.S.A.
  • Commitment to timeframe; and
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote work environment.
