GSK Fellow | Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination

The Task Force for Global Health is offering a fellowship opportunity to a graduate student from June – August 2021.
Fellows will have an opportunity to:
  • Work as part of an ongoing Task Force program/department
  • Become exposed to a pressing global health issue
  • Become familiar with working with coalitions and collaborative concepts
  • Work with a supervisor who is interested in mentoring
 TFGH Background:
  • The Task Force for Global Health (TFGH) is a non-governmental organization affiliated with Emory University located in Decatur, GA. TFGH and its programs work globally to eliminate diseases that have plagued humankind for centuries and build the systems necessary to protect the health of entire populations.
  • In 2016, TFGH received the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize – the world’s largest award of its kind – in recognition of its contributions to alleviating human suffering.
 Program Background:
  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C (HCV) virus cause 1.3 million deaths per year and over two million new infections occur annually.
  • Because hepatitis B vaccination, curative therapy for hepatitis C and other interventions can effectively prevent viral hepatitis transmission and mortality, the 2016 World Health Assembly endorsed goals for hepatitis elimination and preventing 7 million deaths by 2030.
  • However, to eliminate hepatitis, access to effective interventions must improve.
  • In 2019, to help countries build effective programs and accelerate progress toward hepatitis elimination, The Task Force for Global Health launched the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination (CGHE).
  • CGHE, www.globalhep.org, builds capacity for hepatitis elimination globally through delivery of technical assistance, knowledge generation and dissemination, and advocacy among partners united in a community of practice.
 Project:
  • CGHE is looking for a Fellow to support efforts to develop a set of national hepatitis elimination profiles for 25-30 countries with the highest burden of HBV and HCV.
  • The objectives of the national hepatitis elimination profiles are to aggregate data across sources to comprehensively assess the status of hepatitis elimination, establish a framework for evaluating the policy environment, and to produce communication resources to inform program planning, advocacy, and resource mobilization for hepatitis elimination.
  • Epidemiological, program delivery, and policy data will be collected, assessed, and organized into an user-friendly, infographic design.
  • The profiles will be produced in both a standard electronic version and also an interactive, online-format.
  • All profiles will be launched by December 2021 for the International Viral Hepatitis Elimination Meeting.
  • Some profiles will be released for media coverage leading up to and on World Hepatitis Day 2021.
  • In addition to the development of these profiles, the Fellow may support other activities as requested by Coalition leadership including webinar organization and other communication activities.
Activities and Opportunities: Under the supervision of the Director of CGHE, Dr. John Ward, and the Assistant Director of CGHE Ms. Lindsey Hiebert, the Fellow will support the advancement of the initiatives described above. Specific activities and roles for the Fellow may include:
  • Aggregate epidemiological, program, and policy data from credible sources, i.e. WHO reports and existing databases, for priority countries
  • Review peer-reviewed and grey literature for country-specific sources to inform profiles
  • Support graphic design and production of national profiles, including layout, formatting, and other editing
  • Support communication of profile objectives and data validation with partners, including developing surveys and coordinating partner meetings
  • Develop infographics and other advocacy materials related to the profiles
  • Draft social media related to profiles
  • Contribute to drafting of other pieces of the profile report, including the introduction section, methodology, and/or conclusions
  • Write blog posts or other content to support profile development and dissemination
  • Assist in coordinating webinars and other dissemination activities related to World Hepatitis Day
  • Assist with other CGHE program and communication activities, as requested
In addition, the GSK fellow will:
  • Compile and summarize findings and fellowship experience in a report for review by Ms. Hiebert
  • Complete GSK Fellowship Program Satisfaction Survey.
  • Participate fully as a member of the Task Force for Global Health by contributing, assisting and participating in projects, activities, and initiatives as requested.
The fellowship will provide a stipend of up to $5,000 paid bi-weekly at $15.00 per hour.
