Central District Health Tobacco Cessation Intern - Work U Fall 2023
Overview
Central District Health (CDH) is seeking a Work U student for the fall 2023 semester who is passionate about making small changes that can impact a community in big ways. By participating in this opportunity with CDH, the Work U student will: receive training and certification to facilitate tobacco education and cessation curriculum in the community, collaborate with other CDH programs and partners, and help develop innovative programming to change the landscape of nicotine use in Idaho; all of which will be valuable when continuing on in their professional role.
This Work U internship will be hybrid. There will be some in-person and some virtual options for participation and training. This Work U internship will be over by the beginning of Finals Week. However, there may be an option to extend the internship outside of the scope of the Work U program based on the Work U student’s performance, interest, and availability.
CDH will offer a $2,000 scholarship to the Work U student placed with our agency by Boise State Career Services when the Work U assignment has been completed.
The Scholarship is not contingent on a Work U student potentially being offered or accepting an extension of their period of service outside of the Work U program.
Opportunity/Duties:
- Receive training and certification to utilize evidence-based curriculum and approaches to facilitate tobacco cessation and/or education classes or groups. Intern will gain knowledge and skills in HIPAA compliance, motivational interviewing, group facilitation, behavior change application, and more!
- Promote and market their classes/groups with the help and direction of the CDH tobacco cessation coordinator.
- Attend leadership meetings and conferences where they will network with other Idaho-based public health professionals.
- Assist with other assignments given by the staff of the Health Policy and Promotion team at CDH, which may include: assisting with health coalition activities, health screenings, tabling events, etc.
Preferred Experience or Knowledge:
- Be comfortable speaking in front of small groups of people.
- Be able to handle and adapt to positive critique.
- Be nonjudgmental and supportive of participants.
- Have experience and knowledge of working with confidential information.
Skills You Will Develop:
- Becoming certified and gain experience in small group facilitation focused on tobacco education and cessation curriculum;
- Collaborating and networking with other CDH programs and partners in Ada, Boise, Elmore and Valley Counties;
- Experience developing, promoting, and implementing new and innovative tobacco cessation programming.
Additional Requirements:
▪ Work U student will need a valid driver’s license or reliable transportation to get to and from classes, meetings, and/or trainings.
▪ Have the ability to access reliable internet from home or at school or be able to travel to CDH to access the internet if necessary.
▪ Be tobacco/nicotine free.
