Community Center/Youth Services Intern - Work U

Overview: This position will work to support staff and participants in our Community Center Kid City Programs in partnership with the Boise School District. The intern would be in charge of enhancing existing activities and reading and science clubs by planning activities for the center, networking with community agencies to bring in activities and planning field trips in the community. It would require 2 to 3 days at the center during afterschool hours directly working with the kids. Other times can be spent prepping and planning in our office or from home.

The Community Center Kid City Program is seeking a highly energetic, well-organized, and process-driven person to implement a variety of hands-on science and reading club activities in our wildly popular after-school program. Our Community Center is an after-school recreation center run by Boise Parks and Recreation in partnership with the Boise School District. We are free to children and provide a variety of supervised recreational games, arts and crafts, homework help, etc. as well as provide a free supper each day Monday – Friday from 3:15 – 6:00 pm. It is a fun and safe place for kids to be after school. During the Covid schedules, we are open 8-5 and a variety of hours are available to volunteer. This position works closely with other staff as part of a team providing supervision and support to a variety of elementary-aged kids with different needs and interests. Our Community Centers are located within Elementary schools at Whitney, Grace Jordan, and Morley Nelson which are Title One schools within Boise. The majority of the families are at or below the poverty level and we work with a lot of at-risk kids from a variety of backgrounds and circumstances. Our staff acts as role models and mentors as well as recreation staff.

Opportunity/Project Duties
Through this internship, our Community Center/Youth Services Interns will be responsible for completing the following essential duties:

1. Run and monitor weekly reading club
2. Developing reading club activities and challenges
3. Develop and run weekly science club activities
4. Document activities and outcomes of both clubs with the goal to increase participation and train other staff

Qualifications
To be successful, this intern will need the following traits:

1. Work well as part of a team
2. Initiate activities and brainstorm ideas to improve program
3. Has to like working with kids and come to work on your “A” game
