Financial Advocate Department - Work U

Overview: Saint Alphonsus is a faith-based healthcare system that holds its mission, promise, and core values to the highest esteem. The Financial Advocate Department handles financial clearance for all care provided by the Cancer Institute and outpatient infusion clinic. They aid in providing financial assistance to patients who are undergoing these very expensive treatments. This department is seeking an intern that is passionate about advocating for the best care for patients and understanding the most effective ways to navigate the financial burden of complex treatments. They must be willing to evaluate each situation with a critical eye and work with a team to be as efficient as possible in these processes.  

Duties:  

• Shadowing/Assisting a variety of roles on the team 
• Learning/facilitating many of the financial processes for a healthcare system 
• Filling out pharmaceutical assistance applications 
• Meeting with patients (accompanied by a mentor) 
• Effectively communicating with clinical staff 
• Attending staff meetings (both virtual and in-person) 
• Working with insurance companies 
• Special projects (data collection, communication strategy, etc).  

Skills: 

• Learning and understanding the entire hospital revenue cycle 
• Gaining understanding of oncology and treatments provided 
• Developing a more complex financial skillset 
• Learning the different specialty care modalities 
• Gaining office routine and function experience 

Please note that health insurance coverage is required for any student in this role. Students must also pass a 10-panel drug test, background check, and vaccine requirements.
