Broadcast Engineering Student Technician

Purpose: 

An undergraduate student willing to learn the specialty field of radio broadcast engineering. Brings background in technology with a yearning to take skills to the next level. Gains real-world, hands-on experience in functional broadcast environments. Assists the engineering department with tasks that make a meaningful difference in day to day operations. Learn studio procedures, setups, and state-of-the-art digital audio technologies. 


 

Minimum Qualifications:   

  • Working knowledge of Excel, Word & Microsoft Office
  • Working knowledge of Google environment
  • Basic knowledge of research and fact finding from the internet


 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred candidate will have experience/interest in any of the following:
    • Information systems
    • IP networking
    • Analog or digital electronics
    • Audio production
    • Familiarity with broadcast or internet streaming is desired


 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Limited supervision is provided and is expected to operate independently in the performance of a wide range of duties
  • Attention to detail in all tasks required
  • Tasks may require independent learning for completion

Essential Functions: 

  • Transmitter site visit accompaniment. Ability to be hands on with equipment that sends out FM radio signals
  • News equipment / field kits check in/out, periodic equipment audits
  • Cable terminations and verifications (using cable certification equipment.) 
  • Technical Operation Center and Studio cable documentation
  • Routine systems checks 
    • Site telemetry, transmitter health, Studio Transmitter Link health, audio health, network/device connectivity 
    • Studio equipment health checks / cleaning of consoles and other equipment 
  • EAS logging
  • Yanke building Storage rooms organization
  • Infrastructure documentation/signal path diagrams
  • Audio archiving project 
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned
  • BSPR engineering professional staff will work with students to meet their goals of career growth. (determined at starting date interview) 


 

Schedule:

  • Minimum of 10 hours/week up to 29/week
  • Schedule to align with staff engineers during initial training, transitioning to a flexible schedule based on intern’s academic availability and tasks assigned.


 

Notes:

  • We are seeking students who are able to work the full academic year (fall, spring, summer) but will hire on a semester basis to accommodate student academic schedules. 
  • Working hours take into account the university closures like Thanksgiving, Winter Break, Spring Break and all Finals Weeks.
  • A majority of the work will be onsite at the Yanke building but some work may be done remotely
  • Potential for remote transmitter site visits with staff engineers
  • Pay is $15/hr depending upon experience.
  • Depending upon experience and qualifications, candidate may be hired into a paid internship
