VDOT Central Office Structure and Bridge Division is excited to announce an Engineer Senior Supervisor to join our team.

The selected candidate will be responsible for
• Fulfilling the duties as responsible charge engineer in compliance with policies, procedures, and the Code of Virginia.
• Serving as project manager for new bridge design and bridge rehabilitation projects. Ensuring effective development of bridge projects by coordinating design activities with other sections, divisions, and consultants. Assisting in the development of scopes of work, developing and managing project schedules, reviewing proposals and manhours, assisting with negotiations, reviewing proposals, and coordinating activities for advertisement. Overseeing project activities to meet project requirements. Maintaining project records and correspondence. Attend project meetings to give and receive updates on project progress.
• Scheduling, leading and participating in pre-construction conferences, contract showings, and other related structure and bridge construction meetings. Provide a thorough review of structural plans to ensure they conform with AASHTO and VDOT guidelines and specifications to minimize field problems and delays.
• Assisting in the development of policies, procedures and practices reflecting proactive management of the assigned engineering program area.
• Organizing work and monitoring work tasks such that projects and documentation are completed within schedule using VDOT's standards, policies, and procedures.
• Developing, recommending, and implementing process and policy improvements as needed. Assisting in monitoring compliance to ensure conformance to the policy, procedures and state and federal laws and regulations.
• Participating or leading project teams as assigned. Ensuring timely communications between project team members and stakeholders. Ensuring information is technically accurate and effectively disseminated. Reviewing and resolving challenges to enhance team performance.
• Providing technical guidance and support related to bridge construction activities, issues, and problems. Developing effective and economical recommendations to respond to construction problems and other bridge-related inquiries. Participating in meetings to ensure bridge-related issues are presented.
• Preparing preliminary and final bridge and structure designs for new construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects. Preparing bridge plans, sketches, and structural drawings. Checking structural plans prepared by others. Ensuring shop plans meet AASHTO and VDOT specifications, are geometrically correct and meet requirements of project design plans. Investigating condition of existing structures and assist in developing scope of proposed bridge rehabilitations. Analyzing structures for safe load carrying capacity and perform structural calculations to ensure soundness and compliance of structural elements.
• Participating in or overseeing engineering studies. Collecting, analyzing, and processing data and information. Developing written reports, recommendations, and solutions that are technically accurate and compliant. Preparing business correspondence and technical letters with recommendations for suggested corrective measures as a result of studies. Preparing or presenting formal presentations for VDOT staff, or other organizations.
• Communicating effectively with customers internal and external to VDOT including local governments, elected officials, citizen groups, and FHWA.

 

Minimum Qualifications

• Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or related field.
• Experience managing an engineering program and multiple work teams of professional engineering and technical staff, as well as overseeing complex engineering projects.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse audiences and to make presentations and prepare reports.
• Skill in the use of computers and software applications including engineering software and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Considerable knowledge of FHWA design practices and standards.
• Valid Professional Engineer's license.
• Experience in leadership principles and administrative practices.
• Experience applying supervisory principles and practices to include hiring, discipline, performance management, and employee development.
• Experience at the managerial level in leadership of professional engineering staff, productivity and performance management, and oversight of project delivery.
• Experience applying engineering practices and design in a specialty area such as safety, maintenance, or structural engineering.
 

 

Additional Considerations

• Experience in the design and analysis of bridges and other structures using AASHTO LRFD.
• Experience using structural design software, including Open Bridge Designer, MerlinDash, Descus, Larsa4D, STAAD and load rating software, including Br|R.
• Experience using Microstation/OBD.
