The City of Vacaville is currently recruiting to fill one (1) Construction Inspector I/II position within our Public Works Department.  Depending on the applicant pool, candidates may be selected at either level. This recruitment will also establish an eligibility list to be used for any future vacancies over the next 12-month period.

Salary Ranges:
Public Works Construction Inspector I:   $81,607 - $99,194/annually
Public Works Construction Inspector II:  $85,687 - $104,154/annually

A City of Vacaville Public Works Construction Inspector performs inspections of public improvements, including, but not limited to, contract administration, oversight of conformance with contract specifications and special provisions, and compliance with required regulations, codes and standards.

Additional duties of this position may include:

  • Reviewing plans, special provisions, and specifications for completeness
  • Conducting timely inspections on street improvements, bridges, water, sewer and storm drain constructions
  • Tracking contractor's work progress and resolving issues or conflicts
  • Coordinating construction meetings, conferring with engineers, consultants, contractors and developers in relation to public works projects

The Public Works Construction Inspector I is the entry level classification in the series. Incumbents at this level perform less complex or routine field inspections under general supervision, and work under close supervision while learning to handle CIPs and contract administration.  The Public Works Construction Inspector II is the full journey level classification in the series and performs the full range of field inspection duties including capital improvement projects and contract administration under general supervision.

ABOUT YOU

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for the position will:
 

  • Have strong communication skills to effectively communicate with engineers, consultants, contractors, developers, City staff from multiple departments and the public
  • Be familiar with or have the capacity to understand local and State construction standards and codes
  • Have knowledge and experience in the review and interpretation of construction plans and specifications
  • Have knowledge and experience performing inspections of public improvements, including water, sewer, and storm drain systems, grading, paving, concrete construction, and street lighting
  • Have the ability to recognize work project conflicts and be solution oriented
  • Perform contract administration and project documentation tasks including daily field reports, progress payments and contract change orders

Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Education: Equivalent to an Associate's degree in civil engineering, architecture, or a related field, or certificate program in engineering or construction technology, building inspection, or related field.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience in a related field of construction engineering, construction management, or construction inspection.  To qualify as a Public Works Construction Inspector II,  two (2) years experience handling public works CIPs and contract administration is required.

License or Certificate
Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record as conditions of initial and continued employment.
