This is a Student Internship position under the Pathways Internship Program.

To qualify for this internship, you must be a continuing student enrolled or accepted for enrollment for the upcoming semester for the duration of the internship as a condition of employment (taking at least a "half time" course load). You will be required to provide documentation (transcript, enrollment certification, etc.) to support eligibility. Students may be employed throughout the academic year.

This is a developmental position in FHWA's Office of Research, Development, and Technology (HRT) at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. The internship is designed to provide interns with challenging assignments that will broaden their perspectives on issues facing the government and prepare them for future positions throughout the government.

The Civil Engineer Pathways Student Intern will explore the many facets of highway infrastructure research, the associated technology transfer, and interaction with stakeholders such as other FHWA offices and state departments of transportation. The intern will gain this experience while they work with HRT staff as they contribute to achieving the strategic goals of FHWA: safety, infrastructure, and innovation. The selectee will work with professional researchers conducting applied engineering research to develop solutions for FHWA, its partners, and its stakeholders.

The five positions will address one of the following:

  • Assisting with professional researchers in a laboratory environment conducting research projects associated with the FHWA Office of Infrastructure Research & Development's Structural Concrete Research Program.
  • Assisting with the development and execution of experimental and/or analytical bridge engineering research to deliver innovative yet deployable solutions to infrastructure owners.
  • Assisting in the development and conducting research to increase the safety aspect of roadway pavements and deliver deployable solutions to infrastructure stakeholders.
  • Assisting in the assessment of sustainable highway construction activities and materials; and delivering deployable solutions to infrastructure stakeholders.
  • Assisting with development, conducting, and delivery of research to advance the integration of construction, utility, and maintenance activity data into State DOT asset management programs.

The ideal candidate is a student dedicated to public service, interested in Engineering, and working as a part of the Executive Branch.

Additionally, the ideal candidate possesses Microsoft Office knowledge; Customer Service experience; is inquisitive & has a positive attitude; is eager to learn and understand federal policy & guidance; has an innovative mindset; and would like to make a positive impact on the nation’s transportation system.

Desired General Skills: Good written and oral communication skills, situational awareness in a professional environment, experience managing small projects or tasks, proficient with commercial word-processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software packages such as Microsoft Office Suite.

Desired Technical or Engineering-Specific Skills: Experience preparing technical reports or papers, experience in a materials or structural testing laboratory, experience analyzing experimental test data, basic working knowledge of a commercially available computer-aided drafting (CAD) software package; some experience in bridge or roadway design would be preferred but is not required.

Desired Completed Coursework: Varies in accordance with specific duties of the research topic are being supported.

Relevant Academic Majors and Degrees: Bachelors, Masters, or Ph.D. in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Geotechnical, Environmental Engineering or Data Science.
