Mechanical Engineering Internship

Objective:

Department Overview:

The MBTA Railroad Operations (RROPS) Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of MBTA owned, commuter rail locomotives and coaches. Systems maintained by RROPs on this equipment include brakes, engines, propulsion & HEP electrical, HVAC, suspension, etc.

Position Overview:

The MBTA seeks Engineering Interns to assist RROPS in gathering, analyzing, and reporting of information related to equipment maintenance. The RROPS department manages hundreds of assets such as locomotives, blind trailer coaches, and control trailer coaches across multiple maintenance facilities around the Boston area. It will be the duty of the Engineering Intern to identify key information regarding systems, as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Support RROPS staff by gathering and organizing information, locations, pictures, etc., of assigned asset type, such as brakes, engines, propulsion electronics, etc.

• Work with RROPS engineers to analyze drawings, schematics, data, and equipment systemwide.

• Travel the MBTA system gathering information and data on equipment related systems.

• Organize data as necessary for ease of use and navigation using programs such as Microsoft Office Suite, CAD software, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) etc.

• Utilize CAD software to produce, alter and analyze drawings.

• Inspect/audit service contracts.

Required Specific Skills/Abilities:

• Currently an enrolled student in mechanical, electrical, industrial, or manufacturing engineering.

• Able to take limited instructions and work independently.

• Able to gather and organize information.

• Able to investigate normal or abnormal situations for diagnosis as needed.

• Able to understand mechanical/electrical systems from drawings, experience, or field investigation.

• Able to work in Somerville, MA.

• Able to navigate and ride the MBTA system.

• Exceptional computer skills including the Microsoft Office Suite, CAD, Adobe Acrobat, etc.

• Able to follow Blue Signal rules and requirements. These rules will be taught at a class conducted by the MBTA where the candidate(s) will be required to pass a test.
