Sustainability Intern - St. Vincent de Paul Southwest

Overview: St. Vincent de Paul Southwest Idaho is a local nonprofit working to prevent homelessness in our communities. We are looking to improve sustainability, curb waste, and reduce our environmental footprint, all while better serving our neighbors in need. The sustainability coordinator will review waste stream management plans, track performance, propose potential action, and implement plans.

Duties will include:

  • Reviewing recently implemented waste management initiatives to determine effectiveness
  • Visiting our various thrift store locations across Southwest Idaho to investigate waste streams
  • Measuring, interviewing, analyzing, and researching our impact and potential solutions
  • Working with thrift store employees to create a culture of sustainability
  • Finding solutions that will continue to make an impact after the internship
  • Leading project from start to finish
  • Working independently with regular check-ins
  • Identifying creative solutions that align with business strategies

A successful Work U student will be:

  • Excited about making a difference in the environment
  • Motivated, and able to work without constant supervision
  • Able to identify, propose, and implement creative solutions
  • Wanting to make a difference in the larger community and help St. Vincent de Paul prevent homelessness

Skills you (the Work U student) will develop:

  • Learn more about nonprofit organizations, waste streams, thrift stores, and logistics
  • Valuable project management experience
  • Experience working with sustainability projects

If applicable, please let us know of any other onboarding requirements (ex. you require a drug test, background check, etc) that will be needed for your Work U student(s)

  • Primary in-person locations will be at St. Vincent de Paul State Street Store & St. Vincent de Paul Admin Offices on Fairview Ave.
  • Reliable transportation to Main Admin office (5256 W. Fairview) and all St. Vincent de Paul locations (spread from SE Boise to Caldwell) is needed
  • St. Vincent de Paul will reimburse mileage at federal rate
  • Personal laptop required for work
  • When at State Street Store, workspace will be in shared spaces
  • Mentor will be Facility Maintenance Specialist
