Neglected and Derelict Building Internship

Who We Are

At Community Planning and Development, we collaborate with Denver’s residents to help guide the city’s growth, enhancement and preservation. Our staff prepares visioning plans, land use regulations, and codes. We also review, permit, and inspect development across the city. This work is done to ensure the city’s built environment is safe, sound and meets the community’s needs.

 

What We Offer

The City and County of Denver offers a competitive hourly rate commensurate with education. The salary range for this position is $19.75-$22.32/hour, based on education. All City and County of Denver emerging talent positions are supported by a trained hiring manager and encouraged to attend up to 4 sessions of professional development each season (Winter/Spring, Summer and Fall). You will be onboarded with a cohort of peers to help you develop your network across the City and go through similar programming throughout your time at the City.

 

What You’ll Do

Community Planning and Development is offering a unique and impactful Neglected and Derelict Building Internship opportunity for students and recent graduates interested in public administration, urban planning, and community development. This internship provides hands-on experience in the administration and oversight of neglected and derelict properties, offering a valuable opportunity to contribute to local revitalization efforts.

 

As an intern, you will play a vital role in supporting the office’s efforts to track, manage, and address neglected buildings through policy research, administrative support, and stakeholder engagement. You will assist in maintaining property records, organizing reports, and ensuring compliance with local regulations. Additionally, you will gain firsthand experience in government operations, learning how public offices collaborate with property owners, community organizations, and regulatory bodies to improve urban spaces.

 

This internship is an excellent opportunity for individuals who are detail-oriented, passionate about public service, and eager to make a tangible difference in the community. Participants will leave with valuable professional experience, enhanced knowledge of government operations, and a deeper understanding of how strategic policies shape urban environments.

 

As an intern you will get to experience:

Help manage the NADB list by updating the records, researching owners, and assessing new additions to the list

Assist the Administrator with managing progress on approved remedial plans

Coordinate and maintain the scheduling for monthly Show Cause Hearings

Interacting with public inquiries, neighbor relations, and talking directly to owners and property managers regarding the status of neglected and Derelict properties

Attending multi-agency task forces that deal with hoarding, encampment response, Police led crime deterrent efforts

Attending meetings with other City Departments, City Council Offices, and Neighborhood Organizations

Will have the opportunity to accompany the Administrator on selected coordinated inspections and visit problem properties on occasion.

 

Ideal Candidate Summary

 

What You’ll Bring

 

Our ideal candidate has some or all the following experience, skills, and characteristics:

An interest or educational background in government operations such as Public Administration, Urban Planning, Political Science, Code Enforcement Public Policy, Urban Development, or Real Estate Regulations

Strong organizational and administrative skills – Sorting through lists and data entry

Strong written and verbal communication skills – Email and phone conversations with stakeholders

Research and analytical skills to assist in policy review and property assessments

Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional setting

Ability to handle sensitive information with confidentiality

Experience with GIS mapping or property/permitting databases

Critical thinking skills and the ability to understand desired outcomes in a logical manner

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

Education Requirement:  Current enrollment in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelor’s, or higher degree in, or a recent graduate (completed specified program within 1 year of completion).

This position is open to students currently enrolled in an accredited college program leading to a certificate, licensure, associates, bachelors, higher degree in, or up to one year post college graduation

Experience: None

Education and Experience Equivalency: No substitution of experience for education is permitted.

License/Certifications: By position, may require a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.

Location Flexibility

The City and County of Denver utilizes a hybrid model workplace that balances the responsibilities of public service with the benefits of a flexible work environment. Employees work where needed, at a city site and/or in the field several days a week and telecommute remotely at a designated workplace within the State of Colorado the remaining days.  This intern position does require onsite inspections that may impact desired telecommuting schedule.

 

Internship Duration and Hours:

 

Duration: Up to 6 months

 

Start Date: June 2nd, 2025

 

End Date: December 5th, 2025

 

Typical hours: 8:00AM – 4:30PM (Exact times can be flexible. We anticipate approximately 30 hours per week, not to exceed 39 hours/week).
